The Life and Regret of J. Robert Oppenheimer: The Father of the Atomic Bomb

Jakarta

J. Robert Oppenheimer forever remembered as a father good atom. He was the one who led the Manhattan Project, the project to create that terrible bomb, until it was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of people.

Japan surrendered, marking the end of World War II, which was cruel and full of suffering. However, later on, Oppenheimer indicated that he regretted his creation and repeatedly campaigned for the dangers of weapons such as the atomic bomb.

One of the most famous sentences ever uttered by Oppenheimer is: Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds or its translation, ‘now I am death, the destroyer of worlds’. When did he say it?

So in 1945, Oppenheimer and his team at the Manhattan Project successfully tested the world’s first atomic or nuclear bomb codenamed Trinity. The bomb went off in the New Mexico desert.

Oppenheimer is known to have been inspired, among other things, by the Bhagavad Gita, the holy book of Hinduism. After the successful test, he reportedly said, quoting from the book, ‘I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds’.

In a 1965 NBC television documentary called The Decision to Drop the Bomb, Oppenheimer described the feelings after successfully carrying out the atomic bomb test. That’s where he says the line in video form.

“We knew the world would not be the same, few people laughed, few cried, most were silent. I remember a line from the Hindu holy book Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu tried to convince the prince that he had to do his job and to impress him, took the form of many weapons and said , now I am death, the destroyer of the world,” he said in the documentary.

Oppenheimer added that he felt that everyone present at the atomic bomb test site probably thought so. Indeed, the devastation caused by the atomic bomb was extraordinary and posed a moral dilemma.
