Brendan Dolan’s Painful Defeat at World Matchplay Sparks Reflection on Worth of Darts Career

Brendan Dolan suffered a painful defeat at the World Matchplay in Blackpool a few days after his victory over Michael van Gerwen. The Northern Irishman had no chance against Damon Heta on Wednesday: 1-11.

Heta led 5-0, after which Dolan broke back and took his only leg of the match. The Australian then impressed with a 150 finish and also won the next five legs.

In the first round, Dolan was still too strong for defending champion Van Gerwen. The number 27 in the world defeated De Brabander 10-7 on Sunday.

Heta may play in the quarterfinals against Dirk van Duijvenbode. ‘Aubergenius’ will take on Luke Humphries later in the evening.

Van Duijvenbode is the last remaining Dutchman in Blackpool. The curtain fell for Danny Noppert in the second round on Tuesday. Raymond van Barneveld was eliminated in the opening round the day before.

‘Barney’ considered quitting darts after that early exit. “Perhaps it is also a moment when I have to think to myself: is this worth it? Of course you can keep going, but then you qualify for a tournament again and you sit down with 10-4. Where do you do then?” he said.
