The Presidential Pardon Committee announced that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree pardoning a group of those who had been sentenced, including activist and researcher Patrick George Zaki, lawyer and Mohamed El-Baqer, in response to the call of the Board of Trustees of the National Dialogue and political forces.
Yesterday, the Mansoura Emergency State Security Court sentenced activist and political researcher Patrick George to 3 years in prison, on charges of publishing false news.
George was released by a judge’s decision during the case hearing, and he was arrested today, Tuesday, inside the courtroom after the verdict was issued, in preparation for his transfer to his prison cell, and serving the sentence that has become final and irrevocable and may not be appealed against, and it is only canceled by a decision of the military ruler or a presidential pardon. .
Yesterday, the Board of Trustees of the Dialogue appealed to the President of the Republic, to use his legal and constitutional powers towards the immediate release of human rights activist Patrick George Zaki, and not to implement the sentence imposed today against him.
The Board of Trustees called on President Al-Sisi to use his constitutional right to pardon the rest of the sentence, if necessary.
In its statement, the Board of Trustees of the Dialogue affirmed its full confidence in President Sisi’s keenness on the future of the convicted activist, especially that he is a science student who obtained a master’s degree a few days ago, and that he is in the prime of his life.
The Board of Trustees of the Dialogue concluded its statement that the President’s decision to take this decision will add new emphasis on his continued keenness to provide more elements of a positive atmosphere for the success of the National Dialogue, in a manner commensurate with his call for it as a way to agree on the priorities of national action at the current stage.
As for Muhammad Al-Baqer, he is serving a 4-year prison sentence for being accused of publishing false news that would affect the country’s national security, and of joining a group established contrary to the provisions of the law and the constitution.
