Apple Patents ‘Rollable’ Screen: What Could It Mean for iPhones, iPads, and Macs?

A Apple registered a patent in the United States for a device with a ‘rollable’ screen, as disclosed by the specialized website Patently Apple. Although the brand has explored expandable screens since 2014, it has yet to launch any device with a foldable, roll-up or close screen.

The patent shows a display capable of fully rolling up for storage and unrolling for flat use, but it doesn’t specify which devices the technology could be applied to, making room for iPhones, iPads, Macs or even televisions.

The patent also includes mechanisms to protect the screen from scratches during the rolling and unrolling process. However, it is important to highlight that the registration of a patent does not necessarily mean that Apple is developing the product or that it will reach the market. Often, companies register ideas that are not effectively implemented.

Rollable screen is another step by Apple

While Apple has yet to do public demonstrations of flexible displays, other companies are already making strides in this area. In 2020, OPPO was the first manufacturer to present a rollable cell phone prototype, followed by Motorola, which unveiled a concept cell phone with the same feature at the end of 2022.

However, to date, no rollable smartphone has been commercially released by any brand. The future of rollable devices is still up in the air and it remains to be seen whether Apple will go in that direction or not.

Be that as it may, Apple has been recognized as one of the most innovative companies in the world, and this is reflected in the number of patents it files each year. Since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, the company has obtained more than 2,500 patents related to its smartphone, ranging from design to software and hardware features.

In 2023, Apple is expected to present the iPhone 14, which may bring, among other things, news such as a folding screen, a rear camera with 10x optical zoom and a reverse wireless charging system.
