Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
sleep A good night’s sleep is very important for overall health. But this is not always easy to get when you share a bed with your partner.
In fact, for many Americans, opting to “sleep-divorce” or separate sleepers is done to get more restful sleep.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) conducted a survey from March 24-29. This survey asked people how they adapted their bedtime routines for their partners.
Sharing a bed with a partner might make it difficult for some people to get a good night’s sleep. Whether the spouse snores very loudly, tossing and turning, or other habits that make it difficult for someone to sleep.
Because of this, not a few people are looking for ways to still be able to sleep soundly amidst these disturbances.
Some respondents said they used earplugs, silent alarms or eye masks. While others go to bed earlier or later than they’d like to accommodate their partner.
Interestingly, the survey results showed that about a third of respondents said they slept in another room occasionally or consistently to accommodate their sleeping partner.
In other words, they choose to do a ‘sleep divorce’ or sleep separately with their partner.
Surveys also show men are more likely to do this than women.
In terms of generation, millennials (27-42 years old) seem the most likely to do this, followed by those in Gen X (43-58 years old), Gen Z (18-26 years old), and baby boomers ( aged 59-76 years).
The term ‘sleep divorce’ may sound a little redundant. But for survey respondents, this is their way to get a good night’s sleep.
“We know that sleep deprivation can worsen your mood, and those who are sleep deprived are more likely to argue with their partner. There may be resentment toward the person causing the sleep disturbance which can negatively impact the relationship,” said Seema Khosla, pulmonologist and spokesperson. AASM in a news release, citing Medical Daily.
“A good night’s sleep is important for health and happiness, so it’s no surprise that some couples choose to sleep separately for their overall health.”
Lack of sleep is not just a problem of not being able to rest. Even just one sleepless night can make a person sleepy and irritable. According to the Sleep Foundation, they may also lack energy and experience slowed thinking.
In fact, this is only a short-term effect.
Chronic sleep deprivation can also lead to a number of health problems, ranging from cardiovascular disease and obesity to hormonal disorders and mental health disorders.
“Sleep plays a fundamental role in the functioning of nearly all body systems, so persistent sleep deprivation can pose a significant risk to physical and mental health,” says the Sleep Foundation.
“While the term ‘sleep divorce’ may sound harsh, it really just means people prioritize sleep and move to separate rooms at night when needed,” added Khosla.
According to him, there are times when your partner’s loud snoring may signal something more serious, such as sleep apnea or sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea isn’t just loud snoring. This condition is a potentially serious sleep disorder that can cause symptoms such as fatigue, memory loss, and difficulty staying awake while driving.
If you think you or your partner has sleep apnea, you should discuss it with your doctor to prevent possible complications such as high blood pressure, heart problems and even type 2 diabetes.
