The UK imposed a string of tough conditions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, angering the IOC.
The IOC punished the UK for its tough stance against Russian and Belarusian athletes, writes The Times. London has been banned from hosting 2024 Olympic qualifiers in “new” sports, including breaking, BMX cycling, skateboarding and rock climbing.
As a reason, the Olympic Committee named the tough position of the British authorities, who put forward several conditions for athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus at once. To participate in competitions in the UK, they were required to sign a personal declaration of neutrality, as well as declare that they do not support the war in Ukraine. Moreover, the athletes of the two countries also have to declare that they will not support the Russian dictator Putin, nor are they funded by the Russian government.
In turn, the IOC recommended that the athletes of the two countries be admitted to the tournaments in a neutral status.
The IOC called the conditions proposed by Britain “discriminatory”, depriving the British capital of qualifying tournaments.
Former head of the IOC condemned intentions of the Russian Federation to create competitions alternative to the Olympics.
