Benjamin Mendy has already found a new club shortly after his acquittal in a rape case. The French left back will work in his home country at Ligue 1 club FC Lorient.
Mendy, 29, was acquitted of two charges five days ago. Five months earlier, the judge had acquitted the former Manchester City defender of six charges of rape and one of assault.
Partly due to the lawsuit, City decided not to renew Mendy’s contract. The ten-time international has been active with the English superpower since mid-2017. He won four national titles with City.
The 2018 world champion has not played a game since August 2021 due to the long-running lawsuits. After his acquittal, Mendy expressed the hope that he could resume his life and career.
Several football players recently expressed their support for Mendy. Memphis Depay, among others, championed the Frenchman on social media. “He has been acquitted of everything. Who is going to help this brother?”, wrote the Orange international. “Who will be responsible for the damage to his name? How will he get his career back?”
Mendy has signed for two years with Lorient, which finished tenth in Ligue 1 last season. The defender previously played in France for Le Havre, Olympique Marseille and AS Monaco.
