GroenLinks leader Klaver will not be the new leader of the joint list of GroenLinks and the PvdA in the upcoming parliamentary elections. In a interview with AD he says he wants to make way for a new face.

Although he did aspire to it, he now says he knew for “some time” that it wouldn’t be wise for me to do that. In his own words, the choice had been on his mind for some time.

He believes that a new combination should be led by someone new. But he only made the final decision last week. He still had doubts, “but when the cabinet fell, the moment came to make a final choice”.

“We are really starting something new, where the party leader is of less importance. We want to show that parties are stepping over their own shadow.”

‘Not wise’

He says he is now available to make the cooperation between the two parties a success, “but not as a party leader”.

According to the politician, “holding on to your party political interests has long held back progress. I hope my step will give voters confidence that we are really willing to put aside our personal ambitions for something greater.”

It is not known who will be the leader. Klaver says he supports that person and hopes that all members of both parties will do so.

GroenLinks and the PvdA want to form a left-wing bloc for the parliamentary elections in November with a joint list, one election program and a party leader. To reinforce this far-reaching cooperation, Klaver became a member of the PvdA last week.
