Baldur’s Gate as a series cannot be denied its huge popularity across the camp of RPG believers. The third part may be at the very beginning of development, or after the announcement, it did not automatically receive as warm a reception as it might seem, but the developers from the Larian studio – the authors of the excellent Divinity – gradually convinced even those who were a little skeptical. Baldur’s Gate III looks great, the good mood around the game was greatly helped by the well-managed early access with the first act, and everything is currently ready for the release, which was also recently brought forward by almost a month. However, the developers have been spewing information in recent days that may not sit well with all players, mainly stating how big the game will be, how many times players will have to play through it to see most of the content, and adding that it is in 17,000 variants of possible endings are prepared for the game.
Let’s start with the last piece of information he mentioned youtuber Fextralife, who had a chance to speak with the developers, including head writer Chrystal Ding, about a week ago. He learned from her that she had been working on the very end of the game for over half a year, and when he asked how many different endings the players could expect, he was given the aforementioned number. It is important to add, however, that this does not automatically mean endings as such – these are variants dependent on many variables that you will influence as you progress through the game. Still, Ding confirmed that those 17,000 people can play and end up seeing slightly different versions of what the folks at Larian have put together, which is staggering even with the other numbers. Stunning and a little scary.
Another similar-looking number includes cutscene length, which is supposed to be 174 hours. The developers have already talked about the short films before, but it still continues to amaze us that it is, for example, more than twice the length of the Game of Thrones series. As in the case of the mentioned variant endings, of course, players will not see everything during the first playthrough, and the cutscenes naturally also depend on which character you choose. That is why the developers openly talk about the fact that it is estimated that it will be necessary to go through the game a total of eighteen times in order for players to see most of the prepared content, which in the end would amount to 1350-1800 hours spent in the game. But as the developers stated in one of the interviews for the magazine Game Ranteach passage through the game should be very unique, and before we see the end – even several times – we always write our own story together with our character.
