Miami – Soccer World Champion Lionel Messi reunites with another old friend at Inter Miami.
Long-time Barcelona defender Jordi Alba also joins the Major League Soccer club from Florida. This was announced by co-owner Jorge Mas. The 34-year-old Alba left FC Barcelona after eleven years at the end of the season. There he had won the Champions League together with Messi in 2015.
Three ex-Barca players
The Spaniard Sergio Busquets, also a long-time Barca player, had recently made his move to Miami. The team is coached by Gerardo Martino, who also worked in Barcelona in the 2013/14 season.
Messi and Busquets also completed their first full training session for Inter on Tuesday. Messi’s first appearance in the new kit is set to be on July 21 when Miami opens the Leagues Cup against Mexican club Cruz Azul.
Beckham holt Messi
Miami announced contract details for the Messi transfer on Saturday. The 36-year-old joins former England star David Beckham’s club for two seasons. According to the AP news agency, the seven-time world footballer earns between 50 and 60 million dollars a year in Miami.
Messi’s contract with his old club Paris Saint-Germain expired after two years, and he did not return to his long-time club FC Barcelona. The offensive player recently emphasized in an interview that he did not want to simply end his career in the North American soccer league MLS.
