Electronic Arts is revealing more details about its new motion capture technology, dubbed HypermotionV, for the upcoming football game EA Sports Football Club 24. Real football matches at the top level were recorded with special cameras.
For the development of animations for FC24, eight special 4k cameras were placed around football fields, EA told Tweakers during a preview event for the game. The cameras recorded images at 120 frames per second, after which they were converted into 3D images. The developer calls this HypermotionV, the third generation of the technology, where the V stands for ‘volumetric’.
EA processed 1.3 billion frames from 180 matches for the football player animations in FC24. Professional footballers from the UEFA Champions League for men and women, the Premier League and LaLiga were captured. In some cases, AI Mimic was applied to make the movements of individual star players even more realistic and similar to the real ones. The company also mentions the new Sapien Technology as part of the Enhanced Frostbite engine, which should make the anatomy of players even more realistic, for example in terms of muscle distribution and contraction.
Previously, lower division players were used for motion capture sessions, which still required special clothing. Also, such ‘competitions’ were played specifically for recording the movements. Actual duels, where something is at stake, are usually a lot more intensive.
