68-Year-Old Female Passenger Successfully Lands Plane in Emergency Landing at Martha’s Vineyard Airport

KOMPAS.com – A 68-year-old female passenger took control and landed a small plane at Martha’s Vineyard Airport, Dukes County, Massachusetts, United States of America on Saturday (15/7/2023).

This was done because the 79-year-old pilot experienced a medical emergency and could not control the plane.

Luckily, the passenger moved quickly to take control of the plane and managed to land the plane just outside the airport.

The plane managed to land in a grassy area near the runway without any landing gear although the Massachusetts State Police said the plane’s left wing was broken during touchdown.

“On Saturday, 15 July 2023 at 3:12 p.m. local time, a Piper Meridian Turbo Prop 6 seat aircraft was reported to have crashed at MVY Airport,” the West Tisbury Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Emergency landing

After a successful landing, both the pilot and passengers were taken to a local hospital.

Meanwhile, the female passenger who managed to take over the plane suffered minor injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

“Both pilot and passenger were taken to a local hospital,” the Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.

The pilot was then flown by medical helicopter to Boston Hospital in a serious, life-threatening condition.

The other passengers were found to be uninjured and they were evaluated at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and sent home.
