Oleksandr Syrsky, Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in an interview with the BBC, said that howitzers with US cluster munitions have already arrived in Ukraine and will be ready for use “within a few days.”
Journalists said that they saw American M777 howitzers in positions around Bakhmut, which would fire cluster munitions.
The colonel-general said that the liberation of the city from Russian troops would have not only a symbolic meaning, but also a strategic one, since Bakhmut is “the gateway to other key cities in the region.”
In turn, Colonel Alexander Bakulin, commander of the 57th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, explained that cluster munitions are needed to “cause maximum damage to enemy infantry.”
At the same time, he admits: “I cannot say that cluster bombs will solve all our problems on the battlefield.” According to him, this is a controversial weapon: “If the Russians did not use it, perhaps our conscience would not allow us.”
cluster projectile – a container made in the form of a projectile, bomb or missile warhead, filled with submunitions. They are usually ping-pong ball-sized balls filled with explosives. While approaching the target for hundredths of a second, the container explodes – and scatters submunitions. The warhead of an ATACMS missile contains approximately 950 such balls, a large-caliber artillery shell or air bomb can contain from 70 to 350. When they hit the ground, submunitions explode in the affected area – this is a circle with an area of 50-100 meters. The size of the affected area depends on the power of the explosive.
