Authorities in Mexico have found 206 migrants in an abandoned truck in the southeastern state of Veracruz. The migrants come from Guatemala and Honduras, including at least twenty unaccompanied minors.
Authorities believe the migrants were on their way to the United States. The victims had dehydration symptoms and had been drugged.
The authorities think they were drugged so that they could hold back their needs. The driver of the truck is believed to have fled.
Mezzanine floor for more people
The truck was found in the vicinity of the city of José Cardel, about 200 kilometers east of the capital Mexico City. The trailer was modified to make the contents invisible to X-ray scans. And a kind of metal mezzanine had been made in order to be able to transport more people.
Migrants from South and Central America try to enter the United States through Mexico. These are mostly people trying to flee poverty, violence and political oppression. Since this weekend, authorities have intercepted at least 500 migrants en route to the US.
Between October 2021 and October 2022, the US Border Protection Service recorded more than 2 million attempts to enter the country.
