An artificial intelligence wants to take over the world but Ethan Hunt and his team must stop it. This is the starting premise but it is not that, the film is much more, it is plagued with persecutions, fights, bombs and unexpected script twists. I know nothing sounds very original right now, but Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise keep it fresh and wildly entertaining without any sign of genre fatigue.
And it is that, this new installment of the saga is entertainment without more pretensions that works like a shot. It makes no sense to make an exhaustive analysis of the plot or its message as a cinematographic work, although let’s not fool ourselves, the structure of the script is the engine of a formula 1 designed to give us doses of action, epic, tragedy and even humor in its precise measure. .

exudes realism
With few exceptions, lately the action genre is saturated due to the limitless possibilities of CGI. The race for the most digitally improbable scene is served. Turning this type of cinema into a showcase of PlayStation games. Mission Impossible: Deadly Judgment Part 1 is the quintessential product that Tom Cruise sells so effectively, risking his life in every scene. But the key is not that he doesn’t use specialists, the key is that the blows are real and that’s how it feels. In this film, the windows cut and the blows of the cars have a certain truth without losing spectacularity. MI7’s special effects formula is not just a marketing solution with Tom Cruise as a superman, no, it’s the coexistence of classic special effects with digital ones, achieving a much higher result than its competitors.
For example, the film mercilessly throws us into a car chase through Rome from which one comes out with a sore jaw from clenching one’s teeth. It is shot on the streets of Rome but it would be interesting to see the same scene done on a green background and see if it works the same.

Actors
But there are more elements to consider. The film has very mature characters that provide us with a very rich personal background. When Ethan and his team appear, we see characters that we know and from whom we expect what they later give us. Perhaps the most exhausted characters are logically that of Ethan Hunt on the one hand, although he still resists very well, and on the other that of Benji (Simon Pegg) the funny and stereotypical friend who is already somewhat hackneyed. Perhaps that is why his contribution is even more secondary so as not to weigh down the film.
As I say the characters are fine, as are the actors within their limitations. Tom Cruise, who is not in his best moment, beware that he had it, is transmitting less and less. It gives the impression that he is traveling the reverse path to that of the actors who in maturity get the best performances of him like Sean Connery or Brad Pitt, but it is Tom Cruise that we already know. As for the others, they save their roles well above what the film requires. But I want to make a separate mention of the two main actresses. New to the group is Hayley Atwell, whose deadpan certainly helps Tom Cruise a lot, although she conveys much more. She is the new Hunt girl with all the characteristics that the genre and the movie demand for the character. And finally, we have the wonderful Rebecca Fergurson brimming with talent and screen presence, without a doubt the best performer in the film. They know little about the few minutes of her on her screen.

A tailor-made address
Another culprit for the good result is the harmony between the editing rhythm and how the scenes have been shot. Nothing new in action movies, but the difference is noticeable in that the director has clear ideas and does not apply formulas as if they were templates for each moment. The persecutions are symphonies of a perfect metric.
It is true that at times the film becomes somewhat intense or even melodramatic, but Christopher McQuarrie unceremoniously takes it off with a stroke of the pen to continue with the bait. They are necessary breaks and forced tolls to have a story to follow.
In short, if you also conceive of cinema as pure entertainment without great pretensions, this is your film. It is honest in terms of its simplistic and effective formula, but that does not stop it from being pure cinema. Don’t wait for platforms and go see it on a movie screen, don’t be fooled, it has nothing to do with the size of the screen, it has to do with the fact that if you get into a car with Ethan Hunt you can’t step on the brake pedal nor the pause button.
Highly recommended for fans of action movies and even for those who just want to disconnect for a while.
