Banknotes and Coins Exchange Guide: July 2023 Updates and Instructions

In general, the banknotes we have in our wallets do not need to be exchanged and do not have an expiration date. However, among them there are also those that, if we do not exchange them in a bank branch, will become worthless. This is especially true of money that has been damaged in some way. These must be replaced before the end of July because they will lose their value and validity. Which banknotes should we exchange as soon as possible and where can this be done? In general, money that is in circulation on a daily basis does not need to be exchanged or lose its value. However, there are situations in which an exchange must be made immediately, whether it is a coin or a banknote. This is especially true of money that is damaged. Why should you do this? We may encounter a situation where during shopping, the seller in a store or service point may refuse to accept such a banknote or coin and we will not be able to use it to pay for products and services.

What do we mean by a damaged banknote or coin? Certainly, we have quite a lot of such banknotes in our wallets without even knowing it. It is these that we should replace as soon as possible because they may lose their value and validity. What does damaged money look like and what features does it have? Well, money that can turn out to be worthless is money that is:

torn broken frayed torn scribbled or blurred

If we find money in our wallets that needs to be replaced, we should go to selected branches of the National Bank of Poland and submit an application for replacement of damaged or destroyed coins and banknotes. Such an application can also be submitted to the branches of commercial banks that cooperate with NBP.

The National Bank of Poland requires that the banknote or coin be complete and original, in a condition enabling its identification. Otherwise, the bank may require additional research of the money we want to exchange.

It is possible for a natural person to send an application together with used or damaged Polish currency banknotes (with a total value not exceeding PLN 2,000) directly to the NBP Head Office by post or courier to the following address:
