Types of Black Holes Explained: Stellar, Supermassive, and Intermediate

Black holes are some of the strangest and most interesting objects in space. They are incredibly dense, with a gravitational pull so strong that not even light can escape their grasp if they get close enough.

Albert Einstein first predicted the existence of black holes in 1916, with his general theory of relativity. The term “black hole” was coined many years later in 1967 by American astronomer John Wheeler. After decades of black holes being known only as theoretical objects, the first physical black hole was finally discovered in 1971.

Then, in 2019 the collaboration Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) released the first ever recorded image of a black hole. The EHT spotted the black hole at the center of galaxy M87 while the telescope was examining the event horizon, or the area in the past that a black hole cannot escape. Now astronomers know what a black hole looks like.

So far astronomers have identified three types of black holes, namely stellar black holes, supermassive black holes and intermediate black holes. Come on, see an explanation of each type below

1. Star Black Holes- Small but Deadly

When a star burns the last of its fuel, the object can either collapse, or fall onto itself. For smaller stars (those that are about three times the mass of the sun), the new core will become a neutron star. But when the larger star collapses, it continues to compress and creates a stellar black hole.

Star black holes then consume dust and gas from the surrounding galaxies, which makes them grow in size.

2. Supermassive black holes — Gigantic in size
