In Hollywood, a dispute is raging between representatives of actors and film studios
Artists say studios want to use their digital doppelgangers indefinitely without compensation
According to their claims, representatives of filmmakers and television want to set clear conditions
The rapid development of modern technologies does not escape the film industry either. The hit of recent years are computer-generated actors who are either a younger version of a living great (such as Will Smith in Gemini) or the embodiment of an actor who is no longer with us (for example, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ). This technique was excellent in some films, but in some images the result was rather embarrassing. Now a new controversy has flared up around digital doppelgangers.
Actors went on strike over digital doubles
The trade union of actors called the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (abbreviated as SAG-AFTRA) does not like the idea of an alliance of film and television producers who propose the revolutionary use of artificial intelligence in cooperation with actors. SAG-AFTRA representative Duncan Crabtree-Ireland says the proposal by TV producers is just a way to exploit actors for minimal cost.
“This ‘breakthrough’ AI proposal they brought to us yesterday proposes that actors could be scanned for a day’s pay, and their companies would own that scan, their image, their likeness, and be able to use it indefinitely on any project without consent and without compensation. So if you think this is a revolutionary proposition, I suggest you think again.” pronesl Crabtree-Ireland.

A spokesman for the film and television producers, Scott Rowe, also commented on the claim: “SAG-AFTRA management’s claim that digital replicas of actors can be used indefinitely and without consent or compensation is false. The current proposal actually allows a company to use a digital replica of an actor in the background only in the film for which the actor is employed. Any other use requires permission from the actor and negotiation of use for at least minimal remuneration.”
Due to the complexity of the proposal, it is difficult to say on whose side the truth is. However, the fact remains that SAG-AFTRA members have called a strike, which, given the number of approximately 160,000 members, could have a broad impact on the film and television industry.
