French Culture Takes Center Stage at Bastille Day Celebration in Central Park, New York

Every year on July 14, the streets of New York adorn the colors of France to celebrate July 14, known as Bastille Day. This year, the Consulate General of France in New York organized an exceptional evening on Thursday July 13, 2023 at the Rumsey Playfield, located in Central Park, to celebrate this emblematic event.

The Consulate General of France in New York has, for the third consecutive year, marked the French National Day by organizing Bastille Day, a renowned French festival that took place in the heart of Central Park. In partnership with the Committee of French and French-Language Associations of New York (CAFUSA), this event highlighted French culture and history in an exceptional setting. From 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., visitors were able to enjoy a lively and convivial evening at the Rumsey Playfield, where nearly 7,000 attendees gathered to celebrate this momentous event.

A varied program putting France in the spotlight

The Consulate General of France in New York, supported by prestigious partners such as L’Oréal, Tiffany and Tikehau Capital, offered a diverse and exciting program during the Bastille Day evening. Several renowned artists ignited the stage and enchanted the audience with their exceptional performances.

Adèle Castillon, a talented artist of the new French pop scene, amazed the public by interpreting her first hits, including the famous plastic love, as well as songs from his new album. Passi, a renowned rapper, rocked the stage performing his big hits such as I zap and I mate et In front of the sea, as well as hits from the group Bisso Na Bisso. The festival also presented C’WEST 44, an influential organization in street art, which offered a show with the best breakdancers in France and young French and American talents aspiring to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. Joachim Garraud, a world-renowned DJ, joined Marie Berson, a DJ, singer and flautist, for a unique electro duo that rocked Central Park with their catchy beats. The Cadets Lafayette brass band and singer Marie Viapiano, under the musical direction of Jacques Letalon, also enchanted the public with a French repertoire followed by the French and American national anthems, thus creating a festive and patriotic atmosphere.

Additional events to celebrate Bastille Day

In addition to the main event at Rumsey Playfield, other activities were planned to celebrate Bastille Day in New York. The annual Bastille Day festival, organized by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), took over Madison Avenue to offer free shows, family activities, wine tastings and more than 50 stands showcasing French gastronomy and culture. The participants had the opportunity to discover the richness of the French cultural heritage through shows, tastings and meetings with craftsmen and artists.

The Empire State Building was illuminated in the colors of the French flag. Manhattan’s most iconic skyscraper has dressed up in blue-white-red light to celebrate Bastille Day.

The Comité des Associations Françaises de New York (CAFUSA) also organized a raffle, offering participants the chance to win exceptional prizes such as plane tickets, gourmet products and gift certificates.
