Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In today’s digital era, many modern people use dating applications like Tinder to find a mate. Unfortunately, you have to be more careful because according to the results of the study many of the actual Tinder users are married or have partners.
Half of the nearly 1,400 Tinder users surveyed said they weren’t interested in actually finding a partner, according to research published last month in Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. And about 67% reported they were already in another relationship, and some were already married when they used the app.
The researchers asked participants aged 18 to 74 years, who were recruited through online advertisements. Participants were then asked questions about their motivations for using the dating app Tinder.
The researchers then studied the participants’ satisfaction levels with the applications.
“Tinder has been downloaded more than 530 million times and created more than 75 billion matches. The ‘Relationship Goals’ feature within the Tinder app allows members to show their motivations,” a Tinder spokesperson, who was not involved in the research, wrote in a statement.
Globally, 40% of Tinder members say they are looking for a long-term relationship, while 13% are looking for a short-term relationship.
Reasons to keep using Tinder even though you already have a partner
The study reports that many choose to stick with Tinder even if they are not looking for a partner. The reason is because they consider the application the same as other social media.
The Tinder platform is a source of entertainment and social connection like other social media. Some users also claim that Tinder gives them a confidence boost when they get likes and match.
Study co-author Germano Vera Cruz, a data scientist and professor of psychology at the University of Picardie Jules Verne in France, said that dating app users whose motivation is looking for a partner have lower prospects for success because fewer users share the same goals.
Another co-author, Dr. Elias Aboujaoude, a clinical professor of psychiatry at Stanford Medicine, said the findings align with what he’s heard from patients who said they decided to take down dating apps after years of trying them.
“There’s a feeling that they spend too much time using it as entertainment or to distract them from other things,” says Aboujaoude.
“This can be overwhelming, and in some cases, it can lead people to think that the grass is always greener on the other side, like there are always better options out there,” he explains.
