Still a few years to go
The Opel Insignia is no more. But still. Although the Insignia and almost all its sister models have gone to heaven with other General Motors brands, it has a Chinese Buick brother that is still being built. In fact, it has now received a thorough facelift. This is the updated Buick Regal, which differs more than its snout from the car you could buy in Europe for years.
The second generation Opel Insignia was also available as a Vauxhall, just like its predecessor(s). In addition, the car was sold as Holden Commodore in Australia and New Zealand. In the United States and China, the Opel Insignia was given a light premium sauce and was allowed to storm the market as Buick Regal. The second Opel Insignia was always a liftback or a station wagon in Europe. Striking, since the first Insignia was available as a sedan. In the United States, the Regal was also only available as a liftback and as a station wagon (Tour X), but in China General Motors takes a different course. There’s the Buick Regal – and thus the Insignia – always a sedan. That Buick Regal has now been facelifted for the second time, this time much more radical than before.
The updated Buick Regal gets a completely new front in China. With its fresh nose, the car is neatly in line with other younger Buick models that have a similar ‘gaping mouth’ when viewed from the front. Think of the LaCrosse – the big brother of the Regal – the facelifted Encore GX and this Envista. The Chinese Insignia brother has a huge grille with fairly revised headlights on either side with a different layout. At the rear, the Regal mainly remains itself. This is where – just like before – the new Buick logo is from now on.
In Europe it is over and out for the Opel Insignia, but in China the model with a refreshed face can certainly continue for a few more years.
