Jakarta –
The story of a man in Australia and his dog who managed to survive more than two months in the vast seas of the Pacific Ocean is highlighted. They were rescued after the helicopter accompanying the tuna trawler saw the catamaran or boat hull damaged.
The man named Tim Shaddock said that fishing gear or fishing rods had helped him. He is known to eat raw fish and drink rainwater to survive in the dangerous vast ocean.
He also managed to avoid the sun and take cover under the canopy of his boat.
“I have gone through a very difficult ordeal at sea,” said Shaddock, quoted from the Daily Mail, Monday (17/7/2023).
Previously, Shaddock and his dog left Mexico for French Polynesia in April. During the trip, their boat was damaged by a storm that hit.
Shaddock started his journey just over 6,000 km (3,728 miles) from the Mexican city of La Paz. Two weeks after his voyage, he and his dog were hit by a big storm on the high seas. As a result, the ship’s electronics were disconnected, leaving him stranded in the North Pacific Ocean because he could not communicate or navigate the ocean.
Professor of Human and Applied Physiology at the University of Portsmouth Mike Tipton told 9News that Shaddock’s survival was a mixture of luck and skill.
“Sailors had to be lucky as rainfall to replenish water stocks, knowledge to create shade during the day to prevent heat stroke and strict rationing rules increased his chances of survival,” said Tipton.
Shaddock’s condition when found
Doctors on the tuna trawler told Australia’s 9News media that the man had normal vital signs. Even so, he was much thinner and had a fuller beard than before.
After his rescue mission, Shaddock will undergo medical tests and receive more treatment if needed.
“I just need rest and good food because I’ve been alone at sea for a long time. Otherwise I’m in good health,” he continued.
