Russian-Built Bridge Connecting Crimea Suspended Following Emergency Situation

Traffic on the Russian-built bridge connecting the Crimean peninsula with Russia’s Krasnodar region has been suspended due to an “emergency” situation, Russian-appointed governor Sergei Aksyonov announced early today in Telegram, quoted by Reuters.

Aksyonov stated that the accident occurred on the 145th pillar of the bridge from the Krasnodar region. He did not provide further details, but later asked people to refrain from traveling at the facility.

The RBC-Ukraine news agency reported that explosions were heard on the bridge. Russia’s Gray Zone Telegram channel, linked to the Wagner mercenary group, said the bridge was hit twice at 03:04 (00:04 GMT) and 03:20. Reuters could not verify this information from an independent source. Two deaths were reported. So far, there is no comment from the Ukrainian side.

Crimea was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, but is internationally recognized as part of Ukraine, the agency recalls. The 12-mile bridge was damaged by an explosion last October in an attack the Kremlin says was orchestrated by Ukrainian security forces. Months later, Ukraine admitted indirectly that it had been carried out.
