Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny said that during his 2019 visit to the NATO summit in Brussels, he was detained by Interpol. He spent several hours in the cell.
He told about this case according to his biography in interview The Washington Post.
A few years ago, Zaluzhny, as one of the best Ukrainian commanders, went to meet with his colleagues from NATO. The commander-in-chief said: as soon as he got off the plane, how law enforcement officers surrounded him at the airport, bringing weapons, and then ordered him to lie face down on the floor and handcuffed him.
According to Zaluzhny, “a few minutes of roaming on the phone was enough for him to call the Ukrainian ambassador to NATO, who eventually helped secure his dismissal.”
The reason for such actions was that the Russian Federation included the name of Zaluzhny on the Interpol wanted list without his knowledge. The publication writes that such a case is “a regular practice that led to a short-term imprisonment of other Ukrainian commanders.”
“I was in a bad mood, but then I realized that hypothetically I was a war criminal and, most likely, I will remain one. I decided that I should teach international relations and international law,” he recalls.
The publication writes that this episode inspired Zaluzhny – as a result, in December 2020, he received a master’s degree.
