It’s a bit of a cycle… Years ago I drove a 1990 low Toyota Corolla and every time taller cars (vans, SUVs, and trucks) passed with their lights I was completely blinded, When it rained it was sometimes like this too bad I couldn’t see the lines anymore.
Or when a car drove behind you, your car was fully a Christmas tree from the light that shone inside. Putting your mirror down etc almost doesn’t help. It was DANGEROUS!!! I almost had an accident several times because of other people’s vehicles blinding me.
The next car was a “higher” Corolla, and that extra highest highest was a lot better. Yes, I was still dazzled, but that was already a lot less with that few centimeters higher sitting position. You felt the difference. The next car then became an … Opel Zaffira that was even higher (despite the car being too big for us), with the result that glare has decreased even more and I am less afraid to drive around at night / avent now .
And with the lights being turned off on all the highways and secondary lanes, it’s only gotten worse because lights from passing vehicles create a greater blinding effect.
I perfectly understand that gun law course that people go for SUVs or higher vehicles. You have a better track overview, and guys is it better at night or night/rain to drive with oncoming traffic. Too many vehicles have their lights positioned too high, and I don’t mean shine too high, no, too high on the vehicle itself. Those rotten white vans and trucks specifically.
Is your next car a pure SUV? No, but such a fake semi-SUV with a higher seating position, there is a good chance that this will become a yes. And I also understand the logic / problem, that if everyone buys SUVs (or fake SUVs), everyone who is lower will also be forced in that direction. I can only speak from my own experience as to why I prefer “higher” vehicles.
The fault is that certain vehicle classes (in my opinion) have their lights way too high on the vehicles, with the result that they too easily become spotlights in your eyes. Vans, trucks specifically! Combine that with no more lights on highways/secondary roads, which makes things more dangerous. As a result, I’ve been going centimeters up with every vehicle for years.
What I know is that there is a BIG gap in the legislation around vehicle lights. And yes, one can legally control those lights as much as they want in the TUV or whatever, one can’t undo the higher position, and roads go up and down that bit. And plop, you get a spotlight in your eyes.
I’ll end up in my 90s in a van, who knows
