The upgraded British Challenger 3 tanks will be equipped with the Trophy active protection system. The choice in favor of the Israeli development was approved by the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom.
What is known
The UK Defense Department intends to conduct demonstration and qualification tests of the Challenger 3 with the Trophy system in 2024. For this, the Ministry of Defense allocated £20 million ($26 million).
Trophy or ASPRO-A (short for Armored Shield Protection – Active) is an active tank protection system. It was developed by Israel Aircraft Industries and Rafael Armament Development Authority.
The system is aimed at protecting tanks from anti-tank missiles. To do this, she creates a hemisphere over the combat vehicle. The on-board computer determines the flight path of the threat and gives the command to destroy it.
The EL/M-2133 radar station is used to detect and identify the ammunition that the enemy strikes. It has four active phased antenna arrays.
As for the Challenger 3, the UK intends to upgrade 148 tanks. This will be done by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), which received almost $1 billion in 2021. It is expected that all combat vehicles will enter service before 2027.
The tank will be equipped with a 120mm L55A1 gun and will receive reinforced armor. The upgraded engine will allow the Challenger 3 to reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. Another innovation will be the E-LAWS warning system, which notifies the crew of laser irradiation of the enemy’s guidance system.
