The organization Amnesty International (AI) launched a “global urgent action” so that its followers from more than 160 countries can send a letter to the attorney general of the Jujuy Public Prosecutor’s Office, Sergio Lello Sánchez, to request the release of Alberto Nallar , a human rights defender who was arrested in the province this week in the framework of the “repressive operation” of the governor and vice-presidential candidate Gerardo Morales (JxC)

In a statement, the organization urged Morales to “urgently stop violence, repression and criminalization in the province and guarantee and respect the right to protest in compliance with international human rights standards.”

In the text, they warn that “between July 11 and 13, in Jujuy, at least 40 arrests and raids were ordered and began to be carried out in the cities of Humahuaca and San Salvador” and that among the detainees is Nallar, “a human rights defender with a very active role during the protests in the province that have been taking place since June 15”. The crime for which the lawyer was arrested on Thursday is “sedition.”

Amnesty’s request joins the pronouncement on Friday by the Jujuy Multisectoral, social and human rights organizations who demonstrated in the vicinity of the penal unit of the High Feeder Neighborhood to demand the release of 12 people; and the repudiation of legislators from Unión por la Patria (UxP) expressed on Friday in the National Congress together with union leaders and human rights organizations.

For its part, Amnesty indicated that “in the context of the arrests, warrants were issued against teachers, university students, human rights defenders who participated in the social mobilizations following the approval of the recent constitutional reform in the province”.

A “global urgent action”

Within this framework, the organization launched what it calls a “global urgent action so that its followers in more than 160 countries can send a Letter to the Attorney General of the Public Prosecution Service of the Province of Jujuy, Sergio Lello Sánchez“.

“In the communications, people express to the prosecutor their deep concern about the arrest and persecution of Nallar in Jujuy,” the newsletter states.

As explained, “urgent action” is a strategy of solidarity Promoted by Amnesty International (AI) through which thousands of people from all over the world come together to demand respect for human rights.

In addition, the organization presented together with the Environment and Natural Resources Foundation (Farn) and the Peace and Justice Service (Serpaj) a preventive habeas corpus before the federal court of Jujuy.

The presentation was made due to the various complaints of possible arrests of another 14 human rights defenders and lawyers who are defending and supporting the protests.

The international organization recalled that on June 15, “the Constituent Convention of Jujuy carried out a constitutional reform quickly and, according to various sectors, without consultation” after which “protests broke out that led to police repression.”

“Irregularities and excessive use of force were recorded in the actions of the security forces. Currently, the protests continue,” he remarks.

It also refers that “since the demonstrations began, there have been detained at least 130 people and human rights defenders“and that many” are saddled with various crimes that are frequently used to criminalize people who exercise the right to social protest, such as sedition, obstruction of public roads, incitement to commit crimes, resistance to authority, among others ” .

The body also reported that together with more than 70 organizations, “Amnesty International made an urgent communication for serious violations of the right to social protest in Argentina to the Rapporteurship on the right to freedom of expression, to the Rapporteurship on the rights of indigenous peoples and the Rapporteurship on the issue of human rights obligations related to the enjoyment of a healthy and sustainable environment, and the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention”.
