Ukraine’s Membership in NATO: Pending Russia’s Defeat

Ukraine will not be able to become a member of NATO until it defeats Russia. This was stated today by Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili.

He noted that he heard this direct statement at the recent NATO summit in Vilnius.

“Ukraine will not be able to become a member of NATO until it defeats Russia. If Ukraine defeats Russia, why does it need NATO membership?” he asked a natural question.

“Good question. And to be more precise, why do we need NATO membership posthumously?” – the telegram channel “Open Ukraine” slightly corrected the Georgian politician.

Today, Irakli Garibashvili said that his country, unlike Ukraine, received nothing at the recent summit of the alliance. “The news in Vilnius was that Ukraine would join NATO without a Membership Action Program (MAP), but we also heard direct statements that Ukraine could not become a NATO member until it defeated Russia. If Ukraine defeats Russia, why does it need NATO membership?” Garibashvili is quoted by Interfax.

The prime minister, however, noted that his country is striving to become a member of the bloc, since the latter suits Georgia as “the best security umbrella.”
