Markéta Vondroušová became only the third Czech tennis player to win Wimbledon. She thus followed Jana Novotná and Petra Kvitová. In the final, she defeated the Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeurová 6:4 and 6:4. In the world ranking, she moved into the top ten for the first time in her career, namely to tenth place. At the same time, she also became the first unseeded tennis player in the open era (since 1968) to win Wimbledon.
Markéta Vondroušová entered the match nervously. She also lost the first two games due to unforced errors, but soon managed to get back into the match. In the third game, she converted her second break point to cut to 1:2. The next game proved to be very important. The Tunisian tennis player created four break points, but was unable to take advantage of any of them, and so it was tied.
But the next two games went clearly to Jabeurová’s side, who lost only one fifth in them, which led to a 4:2 lead. It didn’t bother Vondroušová. She equalized at 4:4, and so the first set headed for a very dramatic ending. The momentum was now on the side of the native of Sokolov, who converted the first break point in the ninth game and then completed the first set with a clean game. She was thus only one set away from a sensational win at Wimbledon, where she had not progressed beyond the second round until this year.
The second set also started very promisingly for Vondroušová. Right in the opening game, she prepared her opponent for service and subsequently led on her service 40:0. But she lost the promising lead, so Jabeurová managed to equalize. The next two games also went to the side of the Tunisian tennis player, who took the lead 3:1. However, Vondroušová always managed to rebreak her opponent immediately, and it was true this time as well. She reduced it to 2:3 and then immediately equalized.
At 4:4, Vondroušová managed to break Jabeurová again and was only one game away from a historic success. She overcame a difficult moment and won a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career, thanks to which she is ranked tenth in the world. The Tunisian tennis player lost her second Wimbledon final in a row.
