Viewers of a Russian TV show caught sight of the eight-year-old show’s heroine on camera making an international gesture to victims of domestic violence to ask for help.
The plot was devoted to a family in which there are scandals and litigation related to the custody of a small child.
The characters of the show were a former husband and wife from Moscow who are fighting for their four-year-old child.
During the filming, the woman’s eldest daughter talked about her love for her mother and smiled, but at the same time showed the camera a gesture that is considered an international signal for help – the girl raised her hand, pressed her thumb to the palm and then bent it several times.
This gesture was presented by the Canadian Women’s Foundation in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is called a distress signal. The sign became widely known thanks to TikTok, it was soon adopted by the international organization Women’s Funding Network. The gesture is necessary so that the victim of domestic violence can call for help without the aggressor noticing.
Now, social media users are wondering if the show’s editors accidentally missed the moment or deliberately aired it to increase the number of views. Many believe that the heroine showed this gesture for a reason.
According to unconfirmed information, the authors of the program, after the viewers “pelted them with questions”, turned to the police with a report and the investigation has already begun.
