Hollywood Actors Join Strike and Protest against Artificial Intelligence Threat

Placards or megaphones in hand, caps on their heads to protect themselves from the heat wave, far from rhinestones and sequins, Hollywood actors pounded the pavement on July 14, in front of various studios. They joined the movement initiated by the screenwriters on Friday and which is already considerably slowing down the operation of the dream factory. Despite the scorching sun, they denounced their level of remuneration, among other claims, such as the fear of being replaced by special effects generated by artificial intelligence. In the street, we could see Fran Drescher, the unforgettable interpreter of Fran Fine in the series A nanny from hell, today president of Sag-Aftra, the main union of actors and extras.

Actors on strike and stars in support

Many familiar faces joined the crowd of more anonymous actors. In addition to Fran Drescher of course, we were able to see, in the streets of Los Angeles or New York, Rosario Dawson (Jane the Virgin, Ahsoka), Sharon Lawrence (Rizzoli and Isles, The Ranch), Stephanie Hsu, haloed actress of the triumph at the Oscars of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Frances Fisher (Titanic, Merciless), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), Ben Schwartz (Sonic, the movie), Josh Gad, or even Jason Sudeikis (How to Kill Your Boss , The Millers) and Susan Sarandon, to name but a few.

Actors’ concerns about artificial intelligence

If we did not meet many superstars on the sidewalk, many of them said they were in solidarity with the movement. Margot Robbie, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr or Emily Blunt showed their support. These last three went so far as to boycott the London premiere of their latest film as a sign of protest. The strike was notably marked by the powerful speech of Fran Drescher, who highlighted the risk for the actors of being “replaced by machines”. Among the demands, the union asks in particular for guarantees concerning the use of their faces and their voices by artificial intelligence. More generally, the Sag-Aftra denounced the greed of studios “who care more about Wall Street than about you and your family”.
