Ashley Park rose to fame for her role as Mindy Chen, Emily Cooper’s (Lily Collins) best friend in the Netflix series ‘Emily in Paris’. But for the actress, “Joy Ride” is her very first starring role. In an interview with USA Today, she reveals that when she first read the script, she had no idea she was eligible for the main character, lawyer Audrey. “I’m used to reading scripts as supporting characters. I have become very used to being happy with what I get.” She continues, “I entered this industry with no expectations, but I just hope to do my best, do jobs that help me learn and grow, and earn every rung of that ladder.” But with Audrey she felt a real click. “There was so much about her that I connected with. I was like, ‘If there’s ever been a moment to step forward and be the protagonist of a story, this feels really good.’”

The story

The story is about Audrey (Ashley Park) trying to close a business deal in her native China. Her bosom friend Lolo encourages her to seize this opportunity with both hands and to look for her biological mother. They are – unexpectedly – joined by a relative of Lolo (Sherry Cola), Deadeye (Sabrina Wu). And Audrey’s former college friend Kat (Stephanie Hsu), who has since become a successful actress, also completes the group. The foursome quickly ends up in a crazy adventure, full of sex, drugs and absurdity. The road trip goes anything but according to plan…

‘Joy Ride’ is now available in cinemas.

Is the film a joy ride, or pleasure ride?

The foursome end up from one absurd situation to the next. From drug smuggling in ‘very uncomfortable places’ to over the top sex scenes. And when the film suddenly seems to change into a lifelike video clip of a K-pop group, the fence seems completely over the dam. Not to mention Kat’s – shocking to say the least – tattoo, which appears a little too clearly in the picture. But despite a few absurdities and some very bizarre scenes, this comedy is very gripping. It is a story about the search for identity and the importance of friendship. This print contains all the elements you are looking for in a light-hearted comedy: a smile, a tear and – when you walk out of the cinema – a good feeling.
