Oakland, CA – A terrifying incident unfolded on Friday night as traffic on eastbound Interstate 580 in Oakland came to a halt due to a rolling gun battle between two vehicles. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the shooting was reported at 6:23 p.m. near Grand Avenue.
In the midst of the chaos, an innocent car was caught in the crossfire, resulting in an 8-year-old boy being wounded. The shooting forced the closure of a section of I-580 for several hours as law enforcement officers collected bullet casings and placed evidence markers.
The CHP described the suspect vehicles as a dark gray SUV and a maroon SUV, but no further details about the suspects were provided. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the CHP Investigations Tip line at (707) 917-4491.
After being struck by gunfire, the child’s mother quickly drove him to Highland Hospital before he was later transferred to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. As of Friday night, the boy’s condition remained unknown.
CHP Lieutenant Slade Durham expressed his dismay at the violence during a press conference, stating, “Another senseless tragedy that happens on our freeways… We had two vehicles that chose to utilize our freeway systems as a rolling gun battle. Anyone can relate that has children when a child is struck by gunfire or a violent crime occurs. It touches you.”
This incident marks the second freeway shooting in the Bay Area on Friday. Earlier in the afternoon, a driver was injured on Interstate 280 in San Francisco. The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. along southbound I-280 at Alemany Boulevard.
Sadly, this also marks the third shooting involving a child this week. On Wednesday afternoon, an 8-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet in a passing car on Martin Luther King Blvd. Later that night, a 13-year-old girl was also struck by a stray bullet on MacArthur Blvd. Fortunately, both victims were treated and released.
Oakland resident Drew Vanzee, who witnessed the emergency response, expressed his frustration, saying, “It’s terrible. We’ve been dealing with shootings, robberies, car break-ins — I mean, it’s endless, you know? It’s another kid. It’s ridiculous. Things are beyond out of hand.”
The community is left grappling with the ongoing issue of gun violence, particularly when innocent children become victims. Authorities are working diligently to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
