Ural Electrochemical Plant Incident: No Radiation Leak or Risks to Public, Says Rosatom

“The incident was quickly localized and does not pose any risks to the population,” the Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom announced on its Telegram channel on Friday. There was no radiation leak during the accident.

On Friday morning, a rupture occurred in a cylinder containing about one cubic meter of depleted uranium at the Urals Electrochemical Plant.

One worker was fatally injured when the pressure was reduced. Other workers were sent home after medical examination and their lives and health are not in danger, according to an official press release.

The published document states that the radioactivity of depleted uranium is less than 60% of the radioactivity of natural uranium. Measurements after the accident did not show an increase in radiation levels. Officials are investigating why the uranium container depressurized.

The Ural Electrochemical Plant is located in the closed city of Novouralsk, 50 kilometers northwest of Yekaterinburg.

The first Soviet nuclear fuel was produced at this plant. Now this production plant is part of the Russian state atomic energy corporation “Rosatom”, which also has monopoly rights to build and operate nuclear power plants in Russia.
