Israelis are not welcome in Iraq. Last year, the country adopted a lov which prohibits all attempts to normalize relations with Israel.

That did not deter Israeli Elizabeth Tsurkov from going there. The 36-year-old is a well-known Middle East researcher and PhD student at Princeton University in the USA.

Tsurkov has both Israeli and Russian citizenship. She is said to have entered Iraq with her Russian passport.

But it is no secret that she is also Israeli.

The researcher had 80,000 followers on Twitter before she was kidnapped. She was openly critical of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Nor has she tried to hide her work. On Facebook she has posted photos and information about previous trips to Syria and Iraq.

Every time it went well. Until she suddenly disappeared.
