UEFA Financial Fair Play Sanctions: FC Barcelona and Other Clubs Fined for Violations

Sanctions after review

The European Football Union (UEFA) has fined FC Barcelona 500,000 euros for violating the rules of financial fair play. As announced by UEFA on Friday, Basaksehir (EUR 400,000), Manchester United (EUR 300,000), RSC Anderlecht, Konyaspor and APOEL Nicosia (EUR 100,000 each) as well as FC Riga, Olimpija Ljubljana and Slovan Bratislava (EUR 10,000 each) sanctioned.

The years from 2019 to 2022 were examined. Settlement agreements were concluded with Royal Antwerp and Trabzonspor, with both clubs paying 300,000 euros. The remaining 1.7 million euros depend on meeting certain goals, and sporting measures could also follow if the goals are not met.

Meanwhile, other clubs suspected of violating financial fair play rules have met the targets set for FY2022. In addition to Inter and AC Milan, AS Roma, Besiktas, AS Monaco, Olympique Marseille, LOSC Lille, the French champions Paris Saint-Germain, financed by Qatar, are also included.

From the 2023 financial year, new rules for financial fair play will gradually be applied. The reform decided last year should lead to financial sustainability in the future. In principle, this stipulates that the clubs participating in the European Cup may not spend significantly more on personnel costs than they earn. In the past, the rules have been circumvented again and again – especially by clubs that are supported by investors or states.
