Sources of electricity for transport can be not only stationary, as Ford Motor engineers rightly argue, who filed a patent application back in January 2022 describing a car trailer with built-in batteries and the necessary ports, which may well act as a mobile power bank.

IN patent application Ford talks rather sparingly about the purpose of such a trailer, since the authors of the invention propose to test it for power supply of construction equipment and machinery instead of a classic electric gas generator or diesel equivalent. In reality, the scope of such a trailer can be quite extensive – for example, the owner of an electric vehicle with a coupling device can travel with such a trailer to remote areas where the range cannot be replenished from stationary sources of electricity.

In some configurations, as noted in the application, the trailer can move independently for short distances, since it can be equipped with a traction motor, swivel wheels and some kind of control system. It is expected that it will take energy for movement from on-board batteries.

However, the practical implementation of this idea should take into account the fact that traction batteries have a fairly high mass, and towing such trailers over long distances can quickly deplete the power reserve of the lead vehicle. As a backup power source, rechargeable close to the place of operation, it will be quite convenient. Secondly, many modern electric vehicles already allow you to connect quite powerful external current consumers to the on-board network, and for the needs of most ordinary people, the corresponding built-in inverters will suffice.
