The Impact of Exchange Platform Suspension on the Lebanese Public Sector

“Lebanese Debate”

Public sector employees are suffering under enormous economic burdens, with their salaries declining and losing 98% of their value. However, the paradox today is the suspension of an exchange platform at the end of the month with the end of the term of the Governor of the Banque du Liban. How will this affect the public sector?

In this context, Ibrahim Nahal, a member of the Association of Public Administration Employees, confirmed that “with the presence of an exchange platform and its absence, the matter is the same. The process differentiates between the black market and the platform about 5 thousand pounds on one dollar, as it is neither advanced nor delayed.”

In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, Nahal said: “What we want is to live in dignity. The salary is not enough. We have lost about 98% of its actual value.”

He pointed out that “the League is afraid that the exchange rate of the dollar will escape on the black market, which will inevitably lead to the collapse of salaries more and more, which will endanger social security,” considering that “the Lebanese government is not interested in the people, and does not know what it means that 80% of the Lebanese people are under The poverty line”.

And he stressed that “there is no strong state without a strong public sector. We are the ones who provide service to the Lebanese people, and who enter the money into the state treasury.”

Nahal revealed, “The League’s first escalation will start next week from Tripoli, provided that its time and place will be determined within the next 24 hours, and other separate sit-ins are being prepared on Lebanese territory in coordination with the rest of the parties.”

Nahal hoped, in conclusion, that “there will be a response to them during this sit-in from the rest of the parties, teachers, depositors, retired soldiers, and retired civilians, so that the participation will be large and intense.”
