On Thursday it will be announced that the American actors are going on strike, following the example of the writers’ union. Fran is the face of the actors’ union, supported by world stars such as Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, among others. Fran has been negotiating with prominent Hollywood figures in recent weeks about more money for the actors and the consequences of artificial intelligence (AI). They come to nothing, so a strike has now been announced. Series like The White Lotus in The Last Of Us are therefore delayed.
Fran calls it “disgusting” how movie studios pretend to be poor when their bosses are said to be raking in hundreds of millions a year. “They should be ashamed of themselves,” she says during her speech. “You can’t keep belittling, drying and squeezing us. Our industry has changed because of streaming services and AI. We need to stand up for our rights now before it’s too late.”
According to Fran, the actors’ hearts are bleeding now that they are ‘forced’ to make this decision. “But we can’t get what these members deserve because it’s only going to get worse. This is where we’ve drawn the line and that’s a terrible thing to do.”
