German sports clubs can now apply again for the nationwide competition “Stars of Sports” 2024. The 21st edition of the annual award for socially committed sports clubs offered by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken starts with a newly created application platform. All sports clubs can now register under www.viele-schaffen-mehr.de/sterne-des-sports apply with their initiatives. What is also new is that in future all the clubs’ commitments will be visible to the public here, whereas in the previous application process this was reserved exclusively for the juries at the three award levels bronze, silver and gold.
Marija Kolak, President of the Federal Association of German Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken (BVR): “With the ‘Stars of Sports’, we have been honoring the invaluable voluntary commitment of people in sports clubs for more than 20 years now and we have been supporting their projects financially. The new application platform is donating Clubs have an additional benefit, because they make their commitment publicly visible directly when they submit their entries for the competition and can thus win fans and members implemented by our partner DOSB.”
DOSB President Thomas Weikert: “I look forward to every single application because it is fascinating to see the enthusiasm and creativity with which volunteers work. These social commitments, which go beyond purely sporting activities, create something very special: they do it village, the district or the neighborhood to a better place.”
The “Stars of Sports” are the most important German honor for sports clubs. For more than 20 years now, they have been shining for the values that the volunteers in the clubs exemplify: In addition to the joy of exercise and motivation, these are, for example, education and qualifications, the promotion of voluntary work and a sense of community, health and prevention, inclusion and integration or climate protection. In the spring of 2003, the German Sports Association (DSB) and the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken, which together stand behind the most important German honor for sports clubs, developed the vision of a nationwide competition.
More than 1,100 sports clubs applied for the 20th anniversary edition in 2023, all of which are now in the race for the “Big Star of Sports” in gold (awarded in January 2024 in Berlin). Since the start of the “Stars of Sports” award, the award-winning clubs have received a total of more than eight million euros in funding.
