Italian Soldiers to Join NATO’s Presence in Latvia: Strengthening Defense and Enhancing Compatibility

With the decision of the Italian Parliament, approximately 370 Italian soldiers will perform their duties in the battle group of NATO’s expanded presence in Latvia.

Minister of Defense Inara Mūrnieci (National Union) was informed about the increase of the Italian contingent by Italian Minister of Defense Guido Croceto (Guido Crosetto).

The minister assured that Latvia is ready to invest additional funds in order to provide the allied soldiers in Latvia with the best conditions and opportunities to train compatibility and combat capabilities.

The MoD pointed out that Italy is one of the members of the battle group of NATO’s expanded presence in Latvia, which is led by Canada and currently consists of more than 1,700 soldiers from 11 countries – Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and North Macedonia. To participate in the battle group, Italy has sent a mechanized infantry company with armored vehicles to Latvia.

The purpose of creating and deploying NATO’s Extended Presence Battlegroups is to contribute to NATO’s deterrence and strengthen the alliance’s defense by demonstrating the alliance’s solidarity and determination to defend the alliance against any form of aggression. The soldiers of the member states of the battle group perform their duty in Latvia on a rotating basis, participating in exercises with the National Armed Forces, thus improving compatibility with regional allies.

Italy also regularly participates in NATO’s Baltic airspace patrol mission, a permanent peacetime mission to ensure the integrity of the alliance’s sovereign airspace.
