Thanks to a donation, the Nederlands Fotomuseum has bought a large warehouse in Rotterdam. The gift came from Droom en Daad, the philanthropic foundation of the billionaire family Van der Vorm.

The Fotomuseum had been looking for a new home for some time because the accommodation costs were too high. With the money from Van der Vorm, the museum was able to buy the monumental warehouse Santos from 1903.

The heavily neglected building was renovated in recent years by the German design group Stilwerk, which wanted to establish a home furnishing store there. Due to rising costs, those plans were canceled last month, writes de Volkskrant. The museum quickly accepted and was able to buy the warehouse thanks to the donation of (according to the newspaper) 38 million euros.

Museum director Birgit Donker is very enthusiastic about the new, much more spacious accommodation, which is close to the current location. “With a central place for our rich collections and six huge floors to share visual stories and connect people, Santos will be the place where photography is celebrated.”

The renovation is almost completed. The Fotomuseum expects to move into the new building in 2025.
