Jan Paternotte Steps Down as D66 Party Chairman and Will Not be List Leader for Parliamentary Elections

D66 party chairman Jan Paternotte will not make himself available for his party’s list leadership during the parliamentary elections later this year. He said that on the talk show on Thursday evening Renze.

As a father of two children, Paternotte does not want to spend any more time on his work. According to him, the role of party leader requires much more time and energy than the party chairmanship.

Paternotte did not want to say anything about party members who will make themselves available. Among others, current ministers Rob Jetten (Climate and Energy) and Robbert Dijkgraaf (Education) are mentioned as possible candidates. D66 wants to organize party leader elections for a successor in the short term. Candidates can apply next week.

Paternotte’s decision follows on the same day that D66 leader and outgoing minister Sigrid Kaag (Finance) announced that he was leaving politics. Kaag, who is under heavy security due to serious threats, says her work is too stressful for her family.

Paternotte also has to deal with threats, he added Renze. But according to him, that is not the reason for not making himself available. He pointed out that female politicians are more often confronted with threats and called the threats against Kaag “deeply sad”.

D66 is not the only party that has to look for a list leader for the upcoming elections. Earlier, outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) announced that he would leave politics. CDA leader Wopke Hoekstra is also no longer available for the list leader. He will remain politically active for the time being.
