The Kremlin’s Opposition to Ukraine’s NATO Membership: Putin Cites Concerns for Security and Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin suddenly announced the right of Ukraine to desire NATO membership.

On July 13, after the NATO summit in Vilnius, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to insist that he still considers Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance a threat to Russia. The membership of Finland and Sweden in the North Atlantic Alliance does not disturb the Kremlin.

And one of the reasons for “SVO” is Ukraine’s accession to NATO. I am sure that this will not increase the security of Ukraine itself and, in general, will make the world much more vulnerable, and will lead to additional tension.“, Putin said.

At the same time, he clarified that any country “has the right to ensure their own safety“. The restriction, according to him, is only one – the creation of threats to other countries.

For years, the Kremlin has been “winding” the Russians with the threat of NATO, forgetting to inform the victims of propaganda that the Alliance is a defense organization that, unlike the Russian Federation, does not annex territories and does not attack first.

Meanwhile, ISW analysts considerthat the NATO summit in Vilnius showed the complete failure of the Kremlin’s plans, because of which Putin started the war against Ukraine.

Political strategist Stanislav Belkovsky suggeststhat the North Atlantic Alliance gave the Kremlin one last chance to curtail its “SVO” in Ukraine. If Putin does not understand the signal, then the situation for Russia at the front will only get worse.

And the head of the Pentagon no doubtthat Ukraine will join the North Atlantic Alliance after the war.
