Switzerland Releases Mandatory Vaccine Reserves Amid Supply Shortage

Geneva (Switzerland), Jul 13 (Sputnik).- The head of the Federal Department of Economy, Training and Research (WBF, for its acronym in German) of Switzerland, Guy Parmelin, ordered the release of mandatory vaccine reserves to ensure the supply of these products.

“There is a threat of a shortage of vaccine supply for human use. To guarantee the supply, the director of the WBF, Guy Parmelin, ordered the release of the mandatory reserves. The decision will enter into force on July 15, 2023,” the statement said.

The WBF clarified that these are mainly vaccines for children between the ages of four and seven against diphtheria, whooping cough, polio, tetanus, chickenpox and meningococcal infections.

“The causes of supply interruptions are multiple. These are vaccines that are in high demand globally and are available in insufficient quantities. In Switzerland, authorization transfers and the corresponding mandatory destocking occurred, further complicating the situation,” he noted.

Last March, the Swiss government recommended that pharmacies and health care centers only dispense certain antibiotics to patients in prescribed amounts due to shortages. (Sputnik)
