Reviving Ireland’s Remote Islands: A $90,000 Incentive to Move and Build a New Life

What about life on the remote beautiful islands of Ireland? You don’t need to build a house or clear a forest, you just have to go. If that’s not enough, the Irish government will give $90,000 to those willing to move here, which is 7,595,286 rupees! This offer is part of ‘Our Living Islands’, a project to revive the sparsely populated islands of the country. The scheme was launched by Rural and Community Development Minister Heather Humphreys earlier last month. One of the main objectives of the Living Islands program is to “increase the population of the islands”. Applications from the public have been accepted from July 1.

The project will include around 30 offshore islands that the government believes are integral to rural Ireland. This will include Inis Mor, where the Oscar-nominated movie ‘The Banshees of Inishrein’ was filmed, and Bere Island, described as a “tranquil paradise”. These coastal islands, which remain publicly owned, are inhabited year-round, but are cut off from the mainland by the tides. Those who are interested in moving to one of the islands can buy old houses there and repair these houses with the money provided by the government.

Under this scheme, houses built before 1993 should be bought and these should have been vacant for at least two years. The government describes it as “an effort to convert vacant or derelict buildings on the islands into long-term housing.” The new scheme builds on an existing scheme to encourage people to save vacant properties. People taking advantage of the scheme on Ireland’s offshore islands will receive 20% more funding than those on the mainland.

It is unclear whether people from overseas who do not have a visa to live and work in Ireland are eligible to participate in the programme.

Ireland’s coastal islands are sparsely populated, and some islands have schools and shops. While about 300,000 people visit the islands each year, only about 3,000 people live permanently on the 30 islands. Clare Island, a five-mile-long island a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland, is home to just 165 people, while Aranmore, on the west coast of County Donegal, is home to just 500.

The government has pledged to meet 80 goals over the next three years, including improving housing and water infrastructure, providing islanders with better access to essential healthcare and education services, and developing sustainable tourism.
