Promising Breakthrough: Ponatinib Shows Potential in Fighting Aggressive Bone and Brain Tumors

Al-Marsad Newspaper: A team of scientists has revealed a drug called ponatinib, which is currently on the market, can fight the most aggressive types of cancer.

Bone and brain tumor

This drug can fight aggressive tumors such as osteosarcoma (bone tumor) and glioblastoma (brain tumor).

Ponatinib, which is already approved in the United States to treat a type of bone marrow cancer, has been shown to stop certain types of cancer cells from multiplying.

death of cancer cells

The team of scientists, led by NTU Singapore, found that ponatinib can block the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) mechanism by which these cancers are able to remain “immortal”. This leads to the death of cancer cells.

According to the team, 15% of all cancers are positive for alternative lengthening of telomeres, with such prevalence being particularly prevalent in aggressive bone (osteosarcoma) and brain (glioblastoma) tumors.
