Sigrid Kaag addresses hate, intimidation, and misogyny in the Netherlands

“For me, in addition to love and appreciation, the past period was also accompanied by hate, intimidation and threats. (…) It was sometimes difficult for me, but bearable. For my family it is different, all the more a new period of responsibility would take many years to take,” Kaag added in an announcement on the website of D66.

In Trouw she says: “I also came to the Netherlands to give my children a basis. But they have received such a distorted and image of their own country. I don’t wish them that. I would like it to be for calm them down again. That they can have their own experiences that are independent of what your mother or your father does or what people think of them.”

According to the politician, the fact that she evokes so much resistance from some people says something about the social climate in the Netherlands. “Unfortunately, there is misogyny. Especially if women dare to stick their necks out and also have a pronounced opinion,” says Kaag.

Kaag also says that her departure is her own choice, and that the D66 party board allowed her to stay on. She doesn’t know what she’s going to do now. She will remain in office as outgoing deputy prime minister and minister until the next government is sworn in.
