The Impact of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine on NATO’s Goals: Analysis by the Institute for the Study of War

The NATO summit in Vilnius showed how much Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has set back the goals for which the Kremlin claims it started the war, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Literally: “The goal of preventing NATO expansion and, moreover, of curtailing previous rounds of Alliance expansion and pushing NATO away from Russia’s borders was one of the Kremlin’s stated demands before the invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin constantly reiterated this goal throughout the war.

The absence of a general resonance in the Russian information space about the events at the NATO summit, as well as Finland’s entry into NATO and Turkey’s agreement to send the accession protocol to Sweden, most likely indicates that the Kremlin has realized these defeats and does not want to remember them.”

Details: The ISW noted that in the Russian information space, the NATO summit was reported impartially and muted, which does not correspond to the large-scale defeat that the summit actually represents for the pre-war goals of the Russian Federation.

Recall: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the two-day NATO summit in Vilnius removed any doubts and ambiguities about whether Ukraine would join NATO.
