Extreme Heat Wave Threatens Southwest USA: Dangerous Temperatures and Record Highs Expected

– The heat will be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal, the American National Weather Service (NSW) writes in a update Wednesday.

The national American weather forecaster therefore issues a clear and distinct warning before what is expected to be a very hot weekend in the south-west of the USA.

– An intense heat wave will build up late this week and through the weekend, and it is likely that several new heat records will be set, writes NWS.

They see several reasons why the coming heat will be particularly dangerous.

The heat will be intense. The heat wave will last a long time. A relatively cool start to the summer may have limited people’s ability to acclimatise to more typical hot summer weather in this region.

Violent temperatures

The big city of Phoenix in Arizona is among the places that will get very hot temperatures this week and especially towards the weekend. Then the thermometer can creep up to 48 degrees in some places, reports the NWS.

– Temperatures will probably reach record high levels this weekend. Be careful out there, and exercise caution, they write.

Similar temperatures are also expected in Las Vegas in Nevada and the authorities are also warning there about the extreme heat that is expected.

111 million notified

The heat is not just going to hit the southwest, and over 111 million Americans live in places where the US authorities have warned of extreme heat in the next few days.

Extreme heat is the weather phenomenon that takes the most lives in the United States during the course of a year, according to the NWS.

Preliminary figures which Newsweek has obtained, shows that in 2022 there were over 1,700 deaths as a result of heat. It is a new record, according to the newspaper.

– Heat waves are what we expect in a warmer climate. We expect that several of these events will occur more frequently and more intensely. And this is just following that script, says Andrew Pershing, director of climate science at Climate Central, to Newsweek.
